New vocabulary about the tournaments to learn !

About the games won to win the match :
(1 match =  several games)

  • Best of 3 (BO3) = first with 2 wins out of 3 games is the winner (2-1 or 2-0).
  • Best of 5 (BO5) = first with 3 wins out of 5 games is the winner (3-2, 3-1, or 3-0),
  • Best of 7 (BO7) = first with 4 wins out of 7 games is the winner (4-3, 4-2, 4-1, or 4-0), etc...

About the kind of tourneys & brackets :
We have 4 mains kind of tourney :

  • Simple Elimination : One bracket (winner bracket), 1 defeat = eliminated directly
  • Double Elimination : Two brackets (winner & looser brackets), another chance after 1 defeat, we go in the looser bracket to play with the others loosers.
  • Round Robin : Groups/Pools matches, all the players play against the others in the same groups.
  • Swiss System : Two groups where each player/team from a group play against another of the other group with the same level. (1st Group01 vs 1st Group02, etc...)

Before, all the tournaments were with only one bracket, the winner bracket (simple elimination). Now, some tournaments will have two brackets (double elimination).

About the Rounds :
We can use synonyms to name each rounds :

  • 32ths Final = Top64 = 64 players => 33th/64th place
  • 16ths Final = Top32 = 32 players =>17th/32th place
  • 8ths Final = Top16 = 16 players => 9th/16th place
  • Quarters Final = Top8 = 8 players => 5th/8th place
  • Semi Final = Top4 = 4 players => 3rd/4th place
  • Final = Top2 = 2 players => 1st/2nd place

What is a reset bracket ?
In Grand Finals, when the player from losers bracket beats the player from winners bracket, the bracket is "reset". They play a final set because both players only have one set loss in the tournament.
